Sir Peter James Blake’s Childhood
Sir Peter was born on the 1st of October 1948. He was brought up north of Bayswater, Auckland. When he was only seven he got interested in yachting and started racing competitively. He went to Palmerston North Boys High.
Sir Peter James Blake’s Family
Peter Blake’s parents are Brian and Joyce Blake and his three siblings are Tony, Elizabeth and Janet Blake. His wife is Lady Pippa Blake and his two children are Sarah-Jane Blake and James Blake.
Sir Peter James Blake’s Talents and Accomplishments
After 17 years of hard work and determination Sir Peter won his first Whitbread On May the 14th 1995 and won the America’s Cup and broke the world record. Four years later he charted 28 000 miles of land sailing on the Catamaran ENzA nonstop around the world breaking yet another world record in 74 days, 22 hours, 17 minutes and 22 seconds winning the Jules Verne Trophy. His wife Lady Pippa often gave him lucky socks to wear during his races. In 1999 Auckland hosted the next America's cup and Sir Peter Blake himself won it yet again! A year later he retired from sailing to interest more people about the environment and sailed to some of the world’s most endangered waterways.
Conclusion
In 2001 on an expedition at the mouth of the Amazon River pirates stormed his vessel and killed him. Sir Peter Blake once said ‘Giving it a try is much better than sitting back and worrying what people might think if we fail’ and ‘Never take no for an answer and never give up. If you really believe in what you’re doing and you’re really keen then you’ll succeed - it's as simple as that.’
